The Right Time To Open Your Swimming Pool In Michigan

Boy was this winter long and cold!  The deep freeze we endured makes the amazing weather we are having a real treat.  It also encourages us to get outside and start prepping for summer.  Let’s be honest, the other day when it reached 75 and we had to slather ourselves in sunscreen what we really wanted was to jump into our backyard pools.  This leaves many of us wondering exactly when the best time is to open our pools for the summer.  Is April too soon?

In Michigan, when you open your pool is less about the month of the year and more about the consistency of the temperatures.  When temperatures start to consistently stay warm and the threat of snow has passed it is the perfect time to open your pool.

It’s important not to wait too long into the change of the season as algae and pollen issues can occur.  When the water in your pool is left stagnate and not allowed to circulate algae and pollen can build up.  Although there isn’t a certain month in which you should open your pool, it is important to open your swimming pool as soon as the temperature stabilizes.

Opening your swimming pool doesn’t need to be a stressful process.  With a bit of pre-planning most homeowners can easily open their pool on their own.   Of course, if you aren’t interested in going through the work there are local swimming pool contractors that offer these services.

The process to open a swimming pool whether it is an in-ground Gunite plaster pool or above ground vinyl lined pool is basically the same.  One difference however is the inspection of the pool construction. Plaster pools may require resurfacing before they are opened if cracks are evident or rough plaster is present. Resurfacing a plaster pool is quite complicated and is best left up to professional pool plasterers like the experts here at Pound Pool Plastering.

Pool opening procedures however basically remain the same.  This process includes:

  • Remove debris and water from the pool cover
  • Take the pool cover off
  • Hook up the pools pump, filter, and heater
  • Add water if it is not at the proper level
  • Test the water
  • Add chemicals based on the pool waters analysis
  • Put ladders and railings back up
  • Inspect pool fencing and gate locks

Companies that service swimming pools or provide pool plastering or re-plastering services become quite busy during the warmest months of the year.  If you suspect that you will need professional pool services, it is important to schedule them early in the season especially if you suspect your pool needs a fresh coat of plaster.

Pound Pool Plastering offers several options when it comes to servicing your pool including plaster, caulk, tiling, cement decks, plumbing, and coping in both commercial and residential settings.  More information can be found at http://www.pound-pool-plastering.com/.

Things You Need To Get For Your Pool

A pool is a great thing to have in your backyard to cool off during those hot summer days. But no matter if you built your pool this year, last year, or ten years ago, the important thing to have are tools that will allow you to properly clean it and take care of it.

But what are the things that you need that will be the difference maker for it? In this article, we are going to talk about the things that you need to get for your pool to remain in top notch condition.

1. Water Test Strips

Water test strips are very important tools that allow you to test the water of your pool. A great rule of thumb is to test the water at least once a week. Regular water testing allows you to know when to add chemicals to your pool to prevent bacteria and algae from inhabiting it.

Another way to do this is to take a sample of the pool water and take it for testing at your local pool supply store, but all of us know how inconvenient that sounds. So one way to stay convenient is to buy water test strips and test the water yourself.

2. Variable Speed Pump

A variable speed pump is the best tool you can buy to save on operating costs for your swimming pool. A pool pump is an extreme necessity for your pool because it is the heart of the swimming pools circulation system. A basic pool pump can cost you a lot of money in terms of maintenance. But the best variable speed pool pumps can save you up to 90% of costs due to the motor that operates on much lower speeds.

3. Pool Shock

Our pools can become pretty nasty places where human skin cells, oil, and other nasty microbes call home. One way to dispose of such microbes is to use pool chemicals, and of all those chemicals a pool shock is the most important one.

Whenever you notice that your pool starts smelling funny, or something similar like a hotel pool, then It’s time to take out the pool shock and sanitize your pool. A pool shock will kill off any harmful bacteria, algae, and remove skin cells, oils, and various microbes that inhabit your pool.  Of all the pool shock types, make sure to choose one made for calcium hypochlorite to prevent that dreaded pool smell.

4. Algae Brush

Every pool requires taking special care of. That means removing the disguising algae that inhibit it. But to remove these algae, you would need the proper tools to do it. So for that reason, you need to buy an algae brush. An algae brush has stainless steel bristles that can easily remove and break algae from the walls, steps, and any other place they might be hiding. An algae brush is a very convenient pool maintenance tool that is easy to use, will save you money, and will save you a lot of time. Did we mention stainless steel brushes, why? Well, stainless steel is best for concrete or gunite pools, but if your pool has a vinyl liner, make sure to buy a brush with nylon bristles to avoid damaging it.
